Η ιστορία, οι δράσεις και η πολιτιστική συμβολή του Λυκείου Ελληνίδων Αμμοχώστου την περίοδο 1960 – 1974
ENGLISH ABSTRACT From a young age, I admired intellectual women—those who, during challenging and socially restrictive times, managed to stand out, distinguish themselves, and leave a meaningful mark through their contributions to education, tradition, culture, and social life. I have always been interested in the evolution of the female role within Cypriot society and beyond. The way in which women, despite resistance, succeeded in acquiring a voice and a presence in the public sphere has been, for me, a source of reflection, admiration, and internal exploration. By nature, I have always been drawn to questioning the norm and embracing the unconventional, and I have deeply admired strong women who opened paths with courage, collectivity, and vision. At the same time, I hold a deep and sincere love for my homeland, and especially for the city of Famagusta. It is a place full of history, memories, and emotion. Living just a few meters away from occupied Famagusta, every visit near the fenced-off city moves me profoundly. When I first laid eyes on the building of the Lyceum of Greek Women in Famagusta, I felt a shiver down my spine. It was a nearly revelatory experience. As an educator, I instantly felt a deep identification with the visions of those women who did not settle for silence or inertia, but fought to create an institution with profound social, educational, and cultural significance. The decision to explore the Lyceum of Greek Women of Famagusta as the subject of this research emerged as a natural continuation of this inner connection. However, the path of the research was far from easy. Although the Lyceum had an active and multifaceted role in the city’s social and cultural life, I quickly realized that the documented bibliography on its activities was extremely limited. I had always heard of it through oral testimonies, but when I began searching for written sources, the findings were scarce and fragmentary. Rather than being discouraged, I felt an even greater sense of responsibility: to record, as faithfully as possible, this overlooked chapter in the history of Famagusta—to give form and voice to an institution that, despite its significant contribution, risks being forgotten. This project is the result of personal inquiry, but also of a sense of duty. During the process of writing, I faced several challenges. The lack of archival material, the limited bibliography, and the difficulty in accessing first-hand sources posed significant obstacles. Moreover, many of the Lyceum’s former members are now elderly, which made the collection of detailed oral accounts even more difficult. And yet, every testimony entrusted to me, every individual who spoke with love about the Lyceum's work, offered me something invaluable: a piece of historical truth, and at the same time, a touching witness of lived experience. What struck me most was the emotional bond that former members still hold with the Lyceum. The love with which they recall their memories, the pride in what they achieved, and the deep sorrow for what was lost, are the most authentic proof of the significance that the Lyceum continues to have in their lives. They do not describe it merely as a cultural association, but as a space of collective identity, creativity, and social cohesion—a space that shaped them and accompanied them through their lives. Ultimately, this study aims to offer the recognition deserved by an institution that functioned as a core of culture, social contribution, and women's empowerment. Through its pages, I hope to preserve something of the memory, the ethos, and the inner strength of those women who, with limited means but abundant spirit, managed to create a body of work with timeless value. I sincerely hope this effort will serve as a starting point for further research and for highlighting the vital role of the Lyceum of Greek Women of Famagusta in our historical and cultural heritage

Από μικρή ηλικία θαύμαζα τις πνευματικές γυναίκες εκείνες που, σε δύσκολες και αυστηρά καθορισμένες κοινωνικές εποχές, κατάφερναν να διακριθούν, να ξεχωρίσουν και να αφήσουν ουσιαστικό αποτύπωμα μέσα από την προσφορά τους στην παιδεία, την παράδοση, τον πολιτισμό και την κοινωνική ζωή. Πάντα με ενδιέφερε η πορεία εξέλιξης της γυναίκας στην κυπριακή κοινωνία και όχι μόνο. Ο τρόπος με τον οποίο κατόρθωσε, παρά τις αντιστάσεις, να αποκτήσει φωνή και ρόλο στη δημόσια σφαίρα, υπήρξε για μένα πηγή στοχασμού, θαυμασμού και εσωτερικής αναζήτησης. Ως χαρακτήρας, πάντοτε έκλινα προς το ανήσυχο και το επαναστατικό και θαύμαζα βαθιά τις δυναμικές γυναίκες που άνοιξαν δρόμους με τόλμη, συλλογικότητα και όραμα. Παράλληλα, τρέφω βαθιά και ειλικρινή αγάπη για τον τόπο μου και ιδιαίτερα για την πόλη της Αμμοχώστου. Είναι ένας τόπος γεμάτος ιστορία, μνήμες και συγκίνηση. Ζώντας μόλις λίγα μέτρα από την κατεχομένη Αμμόχωστο, κάθε μου επίσκεψη κοντά στην περίκλειστη πόλη με διαπερνά συναισθηματικά. Όταν αντίκρισα για πρώτη φορά το κτήριο του Λυκείου Ελληνίδων στην Αμμόχωστο, ένιωσα ρίγος. Ήταν μια εμπειρία σχεδόν αποκαλυπτική. Ως εκπαιδευτικός, αισθάνθηκα αυθόρμητα να ταυτίζομαι με τα οράματα εκείνων των γυναικών που δεν αρκέστηκαν στη σιωπή ή στην αδράνεια, αλλά αγωνίστηκαν για να δημιουργήσουν έναν θεσμό με βαθύ κοινωνικό, παιδαγωγικό και πολιτισμικό αποτύπωμα. Η απόφαση να ασχοληθώ ερευνητικά με το Λύκειο Ελληνίδων Αμμοχώστου προέκυψε ως φυσική συνέχεια αυτού του εσωτερικού δεσμού. Ωστόσο, η πορεία της έρευνας δεν ήταν εύκολη. Αν και το Λύκειο είχε ενεργό και πολύπλευρο ρόλο στην κοινωνική και πολιτιστική ζωή της πόλης, διαπίστωσα ότι η τεκμηριωμένη βιβλιογραφία γύρω από τη δράση του ήταν εξαιρετικά περιορισμένη. Πάντοτε άκουγα γι’ αυτό μέσα από προφορικές μαρτυρίες, μα όταν θέλησα να αναζητήσω γραπτές πηγές, η εικόνα ήταν φτωχή και αποσπασματική. Έτσι, αντί να αποθαρρυνθώ, ένιωσα ακόμη μεγαλύτερη ευθύνη: να καταγράψω, όσο μπορώ, αυτή την παραγνωρισμένη πτυχή της ιστορίας της Αμμοχώστου, να δώσω υπόσταση και φωνή σε έναν θεσμό που, αν και πρόσφερε πολλά, κινδυνεύει να ξεχαστεί. Η εργασία αυτή είναι καρπός προσωπικής αναζήτησης, αλλά και πράξης ευθύνης. Κατά τη διάρκεια της εκπόνησής της, αντιμετώπισα αρκετές προκλήσεις. Η απουσία αρχειακού υλικού, η περιορισμένη βιβλιογραφία και οι δυσκολίες πρόσβασης σε πρώτες πηγές αποτέλεσαν σημαντικά εμπόδια. Επιπλέον, πολλά από τα παλαιά μέλη του Λυκείου βρίσκονται σήμερα σε προχωρημένη ηλικία, γεγονός που δυσχέρανε τη συλλογή λεπτομερών μαρτυριών. Κι όμως, κάθε αφήγηση που μου εμπιστεύτηκαν, κάθε πρόσωπο που μίλησε με αγάπη για τη δράση του Λυκείου, μου πρόσφερε κάτι ανεκτίμητο: ένα κομμάτι ιστορικής αλήθειας, και ταυτόχρονα μια συγκινητική μαρτυρία ζωής. Ιδιαίτερη εντύπωση μου προκάλεσε η συναισθηματική σύνδεση των παλαιών μελών με το Σωματείο. Η αγάπη με την οποία ανακαλούν τις αναμνήσεις τους, η υπερηφάνεια για όσα κατάφεραν, αλλά και η συγκίνηση για όσα χάθηκαν, αποτελούν την πιο αυθεντική απόδειξη της σημασίας που είχε και εξακολουθεί να έχει το Λύκειο στη ζωή τους. Δεν το περιγράφουν απλώς ως έναν πολιτιστικό σύλλογο, αλλά ως χώρο βαθιάς συλλογικότητας, δημιουργίας και κοινωνικής ταυτότητας, έναν χώρο που τις καθόρισε και τις συντρόφεψε. Συνολικά, η παρούσα εργασία επιχειρεί να αποδώσει την τιμή που αξίζει σε ένα σωματείο που υπήρξε πυρήνας πολιτισμού, κοινωνικής προσφοράς και γυναικείας ενδυνάμωσης. Μέσα από τις σελίδες της, φιλοδοξώ να διασωθεί κάτι από τη μνήμη, το ήθος και την εσωτερική δύναμη των γυναικών εκείνων που, με λιγοστά μέσα αλλά με πλούσιο ψυχισμό, κατάφεραν να δημιουργήσουν ένα έργο με διαχρονική αξία. Εύχομαι τούτη η προσπάθεια να λειτουργήσει ως αφετηρία για περαιτέρω μελέτη και ανάδειξη της συμβολής του Λυκείου Ελληνίδων Αμμοχώστου στην ιστορική και πολιτιστική μας κληρονομιά.
