ENGLISH ABSTRACT The present paper examines the course of the Cyprus conflict in the critical period between the announcement of the Macmillan Plan in June 1958 until the signing of the Zurich-London Treaties in February 1959. The aim of the paper is to investigate the role of the Turkish and Turkish-Cypriot press in capturing the events , as well as their contribution in the development of the events, through the indexing of Turkish newspapers Cumhuriyet, Milliyet and the Turkish-Cypriot newspaper, Bozkurt. Beginning with the news of violent inter-communal clashes in the summer of 1958, the research traces and analyzes the course of violence between the two communities in relation to the diplomatic activity at the international level that led to the final compromise between Greece and Turkey which in its turn resulted in the signing of the Treaties that paved the way for the creation of the independent Republic of Cyprus. The analysis of the Turkish and the Turkish-Cypriot newspapers reveals the dual role they played in the development of the Cyprus problem: they expressed the spirit of public opinion and, also, promoted nationalist polarization between Turkey and Greece through propaganda. Cumhuriyet used a more moderate speech, without, however, refraining from advocating Turkey’s interests in Cyprus. The newspaper, Milliyet, focused on eliciting the reader's emotion by using emotive language in its articles with the aim of mobilizing the public in the struggle for Cyprus. Last but not least, Bozkurt insisted on supporting the position of partition as the only acceptable solution for the Cyprus problem, constantly dynamizing the relations between the two communities and the two countries. Consequently, the present study underlines the interaction of the Turkish and the Turkish-Cypriot press with politics in shaping the identity of the complex Cyprus problem, by illuminating a new aspect of the conflict.

Η παρούσα εργασία εξετάζει την πορεία του Κυπριακού ζητήματος το κρίσιμο διάστημα μεταξύ της ανακοίνωσης του Σχεδίου Μακμίλαν τον Ιούνιο του 1958 μέχρι την υπογραφή των Συνθηκών Ζυρίχης-Λονδίνου τον Φεβρουάριο του 1959. Στόχος της εργασίας είναι να ερευνήσει τον ρόλο του τουρκικού και τουρκοκυπριακού Τύπου στην αποτύπωση, καθώς και στην εξέλιξη των γεγονότων της συγκεκριμένης περιόδου, μέσω της αποδελτίωσης των τουρκικών εφημερίδων Cumhuriyet, Milliyet και της τουρκοκυπριακής Bozkurt. Ξεκινώντας με τις ειδήσεις για τις βίαιες διακοινοτικές συγκρούσεις το καλοκαίρι του 1958, η έρευνα παρακολουθεί και αναλύει την πορεία της βίας μεταξύ των δύο κοινοτήτων σε συνάρτηση με τις διπλωματικές διεργασίες σε διεθνές επίπεδο που οδήγησαν στον τελικό συμβιβασμό της Ελλάδας και της Τουρκίας με αποτέλεσμα την υπογραφή των Συμφωνιών που οδήγησε στη δημιουργία της ανεξάρτητης Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας. Η ανάλυση των τουρκικών και τουρκοκυπριακών εφημερίδων φανερώνει τον διπλό ρόλο που διαδραμάτισαν στην πορεία του Κυπριακού: εξέφρασαν τον παλμό της κοινής γνώμης αλλά και προώθησαν την εθνικιστική πόλωση μέσω της προπαγάνδας. Η Cumhuriyet χρησιμοποίησε πιο μετριοπαθή λόγο, χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει ότι δεν υποστήριξε με σθένος τα τουρκικά συμφέροντα στην Κύπρο. Η εφημερίδα Milliyet δημοσιεύοντας άρθρα με σκληρή γλώσσα έδωσε έμφαση στην επίκληση του συναισθήματος του αναγνώστη με στόχο να τον κινητοποιήσει στον αγώνα για την Κύπρο. Τέλος, η Bozkurt επέμεινε σταθερά στην υποστήριξη της θέσης της διχοτόμησης ως μόνης αποδεκτής λύσης για το Κυπριακό, δυναμιτίζοντας συνεχώς τη σχέση των δύο κοινοτήτων και των δύο λαών. Συνεπώς, η παρούσα έρευνα υπογραμμίζει την αλληλεπίδραση του τουρκικού και τουρκοκυπριακού Τύπου με την πολιτική στη διαμόρφωση της ταυτότητας του πολύπλοκου Κυπριακού ζητήματος, φωτίζοντας μία νέα πτυχή της διαμάχης.
