Greece has a long history of road constructions. The mountain roads represent some of the most dramatic in Europe. However most of these roads have been built with little attempt to reduce environmental impacts, reflecting low expectations from the authorities and the public. The result is what is becoming to be seen as an undue emphasis on road construction itself as opposed to the integrated approach used in western parts of the European Union. The paper emphasize the need of overall strategic approach to landscape and environmental protection, restoration and enhancement in order to avoid piecemeal and inappropriate solutions.en_UK
